5 Reasons 2: To Lift your Spirits!

Updated: Nov 26, 2019

I am Tequila!

1: It’s healthy!

Well……….not quite, but seriously it’s a lot better than most other spirits.

Tequila lowers blood sugar and cholesterol, aids digestion & speeds up the metabolism. It is also proven as a natural probiotic. Research shows that the blue agave plant contains high levels of inulin, which promotes good bacteria and decreases the body’s ability to make certain types of fats including cholesterol and triglycerides – both bad fats. These agavins are also non-digestible so they act as a dietary fiber supporting growth of healthy microbes in the intestines, which can in turn boost your immune system.

2: It’s a Skinny Drink!

With only around 60 calories a shot, compared to a possible 160 calories in a glass of wine and a much lower sugar content Tequila is always a good choice when you are trying to stay on a balanced diet but need to let your hair down. Mixed with soda & lime it’s the perfect drink to keep your caloric intake low. And the soda water keeps you hydrated – no hangover!

An added bonus of Agavins - the natural sugars found in the Agave plant , is that they have been scientifically proven to make people feel fuller longer – which in turn may make you eat less too. Bonus!

3: It’s Gluten Free

As Tequila is made from the blue agave plant there is no wheat ingredients and the distillery process of silver Tequila, or Tequila Blanco is a clean process with minimal additives – think no sugars or syrups added and not aged in wood, no congeners in there either, which are chemical impurities that exacerbate our hangovers. You know exactly what you are putting in your body.

4: Decisions, Decisions

Whatever your taste there is a Tequila for you. Though most of us think of drinking Tequila in the shape of taking shots, chased with beer and loud drunken shenanigans - there is in fact a whole lot more to it than that. There’s ‘good’ Tequila and then there is ‘cheap’ tequila of course. But did you know that there are actually 5 different types of Tequila?

Blanco Tequila – Distilled and unaged. Bottled and packaged directly after distilling process is complete. The purest form of Tequila.

This is my go to choice and go between Casamigos Blanco, Patron Silver and Espolòn.

Reposado Tequila – Or ‘aged’ Tequila. Distilled first then aged in French oak barrels for between two and 12 months. This tequila is also gold in color but instead of from additives this color comes from the tannins and resins found in the walls of the barrels. It is the spirits that were previously aged in the barrel, such as Wine or Cognac that give the tequilas different flavors.

If this sounds like you, I recommend to try Casamigos Reposado Tequila

Añejo Tequila – Or ‘old’ Tequila is distilled for between 1 and 3 years. And is generally a darker shade of Amber or Gold. This type of Tequila is primarily aged in Whiskey barrels. This type of Tequila is generally seen as sipping Tequila and has more complex notes with a richer, smoother flavor.

This one is super expensive but it's worth every penny AsomBroso Añejo Tequila

Extra Añejo Tequila – Yes, you guessed it, extra aged Tequila. This type of Tequila uses the same method of aging as the regular Añejo; only it is aged for more than 3 years. Due to this lengthy process it is generally the most expensive but also the smoothest.

The best is Alquimia Reserva de Don Adolfo Extra Añejo Tequila

5.There's more than Margaritas!

Ok! Who doesn’t love a great 'from scratch’ margarita on a HOT summers day?! None of that mixer crap, that’s just plain lazy when all you need is good Tequila, cointreau, fresh lime juice and salt or sugar for the rim! But there’s more, lot’s more.

My personal fave is a Paloma. It’s another simple drink with only 3 ingredients, Tequila of course, lime juice and grapefruit. Best served in a tall glass over ice – super refreshing!

Then of course there is the Tequila Sunrise – not one I personally like - the grenadine makes it way to sweet. But if you have a sweet tooth it might be good for you.

The Juan Collins is a lesser known Tequila Cocktail, taking its name from of course the John Collins whiskey based drink. Gold Tequila, agave syrup, lemon juice and soda water – you could always add a cherry too!

Well that’s all she wrote on Tequila! Thinking I might just go make myself a skinny, healthy, GF Tequila cocktail.
